Navigation

Navigation courses are delivered in accordance with the nationally recognised organisation, NNAS (nnas.org).

Booking a Navigation Course

Courses are created for the first and second Monday of most months but if you would like to contact me with a few dates that are convenient to you, I will consider them and get back to you. Current pricing is £115.00 but this reduces by £5 if you book through me directly (ie not via the NNAS system)
I normally only take a max of 4 people as this creates a more hands-on experience for candidates.
Check the NNAS website here (note: the search mode is poor and you'll need to enter your town then sort by 'Distance' to get suitable results)
OR
contact me directly.

Outdoor Discovery Award

Previously known as Young Navigator Star Awards (YNSA), the revamped and updated ODA continues with the core ethos of the YNSA: encouraging exploration and journeying in local areas using simple maps such as street maps, pictorial park maps and orienteering maps.

There is a gradual learning progression via One Star, Two Star and Three Star levels, with certificates awarded to those that complete each level.

Although the ODA levels are aimed at all age groups and abilities, we only deliver this award to school children, typically starting from 11-12 yrs (equivalent to English KS3 or Yr7 ). We offer this award to school and youth groups only. Enquiries for the ODA must be sent to us  via a School's (or Youth Group's) official email account. Typically, this is co-ordinated by Geography and/or PE departments.

Navigator Awards

The Navigator Awards have been officially credit-rated by the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework Partnership (SCQF). This further boosts the credibility of the Navigator Award and gives successful candidates more options when amassing credits for future education and employment.

The SCQF rate the Bronze at level 4, Silver at 5 and Gold at level 6 with each award worth 2 credit points. These ratings are accepted by all the UK qualifications agencies, e.g. the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) at levels 1, 2, & 3, and by the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) at levels 2, 3 & 4.

Bronze

The Bronze National Navigation Award is a practical hands-on award. It is aimed at people with no navigation experience whether you are new to the outdoors or have been relying on others, guidebooks or easy well-defined routes.

It is also the starting point for many Duke of Edinburgh students, scouts and guides and cadet groups who are looking to develop their outdoor skills.

The syllabus of the Bronze National Navigation Award teaches navigation in the countryside using paths tracks and other linear features. Basic map interpretation and compass work is also included.

Bronze courses are offered in the Bedfordshire area.

Silver

The Silver National Navigation Award develops the navigation skills acquired at the Bronze level. It adds skills required to navigate to features and places some distance from paths and tracks. It teaches accurate compass work. It will also teach you to select the suitable navigational techniques to cross open country.

Silver National Navigation Award courses are taught in areas with access to open country and involve periods where you’ll be navigating away from paths and tracks.

As Silver requires access to 'open ground', I offer this award in either the Peak District or in several areas of Wales from Snowdonia through mid-Wales to Brecon Beacons.

Gold

(this course is not routinely offered, please contact me for bespoke training & assessment)
